Amazon leads broad advance as AMD lags on Oct. 9

Gains outnumbered losses across the watchlist on Thursday. Amazon.com (AMZN) topped the board with the largest move of the session, and was followed by Visa (V), Microsoft (MSFT) and UnitedHealth Group (UNH), each closing more than 2% higher. Tesla (TSLA) also advanced, rounding out a group of five stocks that gained more than 2% on the day.
Semiconductor names were the notable exception to the broader advance. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) posted the day’s steepest decline, while NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) slipped modestly, leaving chip stocks as the weak spot in an otherwise firm session. Apple (AAPL) was the other decliner of note, down on the day.
Elsewhere, moves were more muted. SpaceX (SPCX) and Alphabet (GOOGL) each gained around a point, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) ticked up fractionally, and Meta Platforms (META) closed little changed to the downside. Taken together, the session reflected a broad but uneven advance, with large-cap consumer and financial names outperforming a softer semiconductor group.
Notable movers
Amazon.com (AMZN) was the session’s biggest mover, closing up 3.3% to lead all watchlist stocks higher.
Visa (V) rose 2.8%, the second-largest gain on the watchlist.
Microsoft (MSFT) climbed 2.4% on the day.
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) added 2.3%, extending the session’s broad advance among large-cap names.
